Airborne Calibration Solutions

The need for precise radiometric solutions for aerial reconnaissance and imaging is steadily increasing with the advent of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and more detailed image requirements in a variety of challenging tactical environments. Science has also taken to the air with hyperspectral, LiDAR and spectral sensing applications that require accurate calibration and portability to remote locations.

Awaken the Force for Your Space Applications

Labsphere’s Space-Grade Spectralon® Reflectance Material has gained wide acceptance as a reflecting diffuse material for terrestrial remote sensing applications for both field and laboratory applications. Space-Grade Spectralon combines high reflectance with an extremely Lambertian reflectance profile.

Space-Grade Spectralon has undergone extensive testing for UV exposure, Proton bombardment, atomic oxygen exposure, a-Lyman radiation, outgassing and static charge testing by national laboratories, such as Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Goddard Space Flight Center, TRW, and CSEM. This testing has led to the development of a stringent manufacturing process that eliminates potential contaminants which lead to UV degradation.


Hyperspectral Calibration Solutions

One of the most dynamic changes to the remote sensing market is the innovation of hyperspectral imagers. These challenging devices combine a conventional 2D image with a third dimension containing spectral or band information to create a “hyper-cube”. Calibration also gets a third dimension of complexity in dealing with simultaneous imaging issues, broadband scenes, spectral registration and stray light (in and out of band) considerations.

Quantum Efficiency for FPA or Prober-based Solutions

Baseline characterization of FPAs and imaging chips is required at the earliest possible point in production helping to sort out critical performance and yield issues while keeping costs as low as possible.

Labsphere has designed uniform irradiance systems for wafer prober, pre-packaged chip and raw-FPA level testing of spectral quantum efficiency (QE), flat fielding, linearity, dynamic range and special controlled angle sets.

Ground-Based Imager & Sensor Testing

Ambient Contrast Testing

Sources of luminance and radiance designed to uniformly illuminate for displays and video screens for testing ambient contrast to determine visibility of the display image under varying illumination conditions.


Flat Fielding/PRNU

Characterization of pixel-to-pixel, or sensor, or imager non-uniformity in response by exposure to a known uniform (flat) field of light with Labsphere’s expansive line of broadband and tunable light sources.


Ground Truth

Validate airborne or space-borne optical measurements with traceable measurements on designated ground diffuse reflectance targets.


Linearity/Dynamic Range (Sensor)

Testing a device using a known (calibrated) uniform light source that can translate from very low to very high levels and determine the saturation and signal to noise of the camera and the linearity & dynamic response of the camera over that range of light. Labsphere offers specific lines of calibration sources and targets for linearity testing.


Luminance Meter Calibration

Usually measured with an imaging photometer know as a luminance meter or spectroradiometer. To calibrate these instruments an accurate source of luminance is required. Labsphere offers both source and target based solutions NMI traceable luminance calibrations.


Luminance Contrast

Testing of displays and video screens for emission of visible light vs reflected ambient light. This is done to determine visibility of the display image and requires a uniform source of irradiance on the display. Labsphere’s uniform source spheres and systems can be configured to meet your display test needs.


Spectral Radiance

Spectral radiance and radiance are key radiometric values used to calibrate the spectral response of spectroradiometers, multispectral and hyperspectral imagers. Time Of Flight

Describes a variety of methods that measure the time that it takes for a light wave to travel a distance through a medium. This measurement can be used for a time standard or track objects and even the topology of an object. To calibrate these time of flight instruments diffuse targets of varying reflectance levels and shapes are required. Labsphere’s Permaflect and Spectralon® are ideal for these applications.
